★NEW★What future leaders need

Yusuke  Fujiki

Graduate major in Chemistry
Dept.of Chemistry, School of Science

I have taken the three Core Liberal Arts Education courses and now I am learning what it means to be a leader in a practical manner by working as GSA TA.  Through dialogue with other students, I was able to encounter the various ways of thinking of different people with different backgrounds, and to understand what kind thinking and behavior is necessary for the future leaders. I want to continue learning about these subjects as it will be beneficial when I enter the work life.

★NEW★ Classes that will have positive impact for future

Ami Kuromaru

Graduate Major in Social and Human Sciences
Dept. of Social and Human Sciences. School of Environment and Society

After completing Peer Review Practicum and Advanced Leadership Workshop, I received GSA-R and GSA-F certification and performed as a TA. If you take advantage of what you have learned in class and engage with juniors, you will be able to discover new things and broaden your perspective. The classes lessons that were not only listening but had practical activities were exciting for me as I want to move on to be a researcher.

In Advanced Leadership Workshop, I was able to take charge of undergraduate classes, which gave me the opportunity to think again about the meaning of learning and researching. Also after being certified as GSA-F, I participated in classes as a TA and was able to practice the facilitation of eliciting opinions and encouraging active discussion.

★NEW★Abilities to elicit better opinions and to create new discussions

Yuki Ito

Graduate major in Information and Communications Engineering
Dept. of Information and Communications Engineering, School of Engineering

The discussions this far have been merely opinion exchanges and no further development has happened. But while participating the classes as a GSA I developed my abilities to elicit better opinions from different people and to create new discussions based on those opinions. In the future we need these abilities to maximize the strength of our members so I would like to continue training and developing these skills.

★NEW★Participating in GSA program

Daisuke Kimura

Graduate major in Materials Science and Engineering
Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology

【Taking the Peer Review Practicum】 Together with the undergraduate students I was able to learn what kind of writings are easier to be understood. I feel that through the practice of peer review I have acquired the ability to organize assertions and to take an overall view on the text. In my research life, there are many occasions when I need to write texts, and I think these abilities will be useful to everyone. 【Taking the Advanced Leadership Workshop】   The theme in the facilitation learning was to encourage dialogue. To practice that I went all the way back to think what is dialogue and could gain personal insight awareness. Also, by participating as a facilitator in small group classes of the Tokyo Tech Visionary Project, I learned what works well and what does not, and it was a very valuable experience.

Learning Acquired Through Involvement

Ayaka Hayashi

Graduate Major in Social and Human Sciences
Dept. of Social and Human Sciences, School of Environment and Society

Participation in the classroom as a GSA-F frequently provided occasions for me to receive feedback on my own ideas from other students. Perspectives held by other people prompted me to assess matters from multiple facets, while I also became quite sensitive to the challenge of communicating precisely what I wanted to communicate.

Discovering Excellent Team Building

Kazumi Miyata

Graduate Major in Social and Human Sciences
Dept. of Social and Human Sciences, School of Environment and Society

Before starting this course, I honestly was unsure. Was it necessary to take a class about leadership for a master’s degree predominantly pursuing research? Would I be able to complete the groupwork with successful communication among my peers? Taking the class and deliberating with my fellow students nurtured a perspective on how to work as a good team.

Facilitation Techniques Became Useful in Job Search

Ryuki Tahara

Graduate Major in Nuclear Engineering
Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology

Through classroom instruction, I studied supportive leadership, in which one learns to trust, delegate to, and grow together with other people. During my job search activities and group discussions at academic conferences, I exploited the facilitation techniques acquired through GSA work and was able to successfully compile the comments of my groups.

Enjoyable Classwork for Instructor too

Masao Murota

Professor, Institute for Liberal Arts

Large numbers of highly motivated and eager students made the classroom enjoyable for the faculty member as well. I find that graduate students working on their Advanced Leadership Workshop serve an extremely dependable position as the bridge between faculty and first-year undergraduate students. They are excellent role models for our freshly admitted students.

By listening well to others, I learned how to draw out people’s strengths, which led to enhanced communication skills. The high motivation held by undergraduate students was stimulating, while I could also gain a sense of my own development.

Paragraph Writing was Useful When Writing Reasons for Job Application

Yusuke Imamura

Graduate Major in Chemical Science and Engineering
Dept. of Chemical Science and Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology

I learned paragraph writing, which was of tremendous value in writing (the reason for applying for a position in my job search, for instance). The skill creates a difference in the ease of reading text and getting the message across.
